"Options Advice for A Dropped WD Passport Not Recognized", I dropped my WD Passport 2TB backup drive on the way to restoring my HDD after a new build. How's that for crap luck? It has a whirring noise that sounds like a stuck spindle/bad liquid bearings (based on web research). There is no clicking. The drive is not recognized in My Computer in Windows 7. I looked in Computer Management to see if it showed up there, and it didn't show up with its correct name or capacity, BUT I think I remember some strange Disk 0 entry that show 0 capacity. I haven't tried to check that again because I'm afraid of damaging the content, so I have two questions. Question #1: Will simply trying to recognize the drive cause damage to the data, making a successful professional recovery less likely? Question #2: If there is a mechanical problem, not just a logical problem, will trying to re-partition or reformat the disk (if that would even work) cause damage to the data that would make a professional recovery less successful? Note: When I plugged it into the MacBook Pro, I got the message that the disk was not initialized. I had a 1TB WD Passport that had not been dropped, but failed to mount, and I either fixed the partition in Disk Management or reformatted (it was years ago and I don't remember which), and I was then able to recover the files using Stellar Phoenix Recovery. That disk didn't have anything important on it, though. This disk has everything critical to daily functioning at work and in life, not to mention pictures of my family, so I'm not as quick to test my luck with it (especially since my luck has already proved to be very bad, indeed)!
